Naming Troubles

We have had all sorts of issues coming up with a name for new puppy. I think it is hard because there are a lot of options out there and it is also hard when we know the puppy yet. Somehow we picked out Freya's name way in advance and it worked perfectly for her.

Here are a couple of options we have been coming up with and my thoughts on them:

Odin - Norse god, father of the Thor. This is one of our original ideas. It is still on the table since he is known for his wisdom and justice.

Loki - Norse god of mischief. This was on and off of the list because of the whole mischief thing. I didn't want to jinx us. Then we decided to go see the movie Thor to help us decide. After seeing the movie we are less inclined to go with Loki since he is the evil one in the movie.

Viggo - A common Norwegian name and also Viggo Mortenson the actor's name. I always loved the name ever since he was Aragon in Lord of the Rings. I had kind of want the name for one of my kids, but I feel like that is a little obvious. I can get away with it much more so for a puppy, especially a Norwegian one. This is also a serious choice.

Durin/Turin - Both of these come from J.R.R. Tolkien's characters. They are a dwarf king and a human warrior, respectively. A lot of Tolkien's language and characters come from Scandanavian origins, so these fit well. I feel like "Durin and Freya" has a nice ring to it.

Drogo - This is somewhat a play on the word dragon and also a character from The Game of Thrones who is a fierce warrior (he also dies at the end of the first book). Probably not a serious contender but I like it.

Soken - A variation of "to seek/search" in Swedish. This indicates just how much research we have been doing. I have been taking words and looking them up in other languages, namely Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish. I looked up "to hunt", and it turns out the English word "hunt" comes from Norway, so it is the same. So then I looked up synonyms for hunt and came up with search.

I am sure more things will come up in the next week. We want something kind of Norwegianish and kind of unique. Who knows...

Ultimately it will come down to when puppy arrives sometime next Tuesday (we still don't know when despite my emails and a phone call/voicemail). I guess we will just play around with names until we feel one is right.

  1. So many good options! Tough call Rachi! Either way you know it will be uber loved because you're putting so much time into it! I really like Soken actually (i hadn't heard you discuss this one yet) Either way I'm sure you will come up with something brilliant.

Side note: if this is how long it takes to come up with a name for your elkhound I cannot imagine naming your children (not that puppy will not be like a family member/child) just saying, good luck.
